This workshop is focused on healthcare providers/students in healthcare professions who will be working with people who need assistive technology to communicate. These may be people who have lost their ability to speak due to neurological conditions such as ALS or stroke or due to developmental issues.
Tom Meadows is the presenter who is a tech entrepreneur and founded Stevesway.org in honor of his best friend who recently died from ALS. Tom watched with frustration as his oldest friend, Steve, struggled to communicate as his ALS progressed. He could see how being unable to connect was creating an increasingly isolated life for Steve. It was making a difficult situation so much worse, so much lonelier and depressing than it needed to be. Tom set about exploring off-the-shelf tech solutions that anyone could use. It turned out that an ordinary iPhone has sophisticated voice and gesture recognition capabilities buried deep inside its operating system. Tom figured out the steps required to turn on these tools and he has now developed a kit that allows anyone with ALS, or other neuro-degenerative condition, to navigate the changing communication needs they may have along the path of their disease.
Tom’s goal is to educate people on how to utilize the iPhone as an assistive communication device. Tom is particularly interested in reaching healthcare professions who will use this technology to support their patients and families.
Please bring your iPhone as this is a hands-on workshop.
